Σύμφωνα με τη σεισμολογική υπηρεσία του Μεξικού (Servicio Sismológico Nacional, SSN), το εστιακό βάθος υπολογίζεται σε περίπου 10 χιλιόμετρα, ενώ το επίκεντρο εντοπίζεται στη θαλάσσια περιοχή 135 χιλιόμετρα νοτιοδυτικά της πόλης Χιδάλγο, στην πολιτεία Τσιάπας.
